COVID-19 RESPONSE IN FIJI Fiji's Covid-19 resurgence since April has escalated, particularly in Viti Levu. New Zealand's contribution has been substantial with ground assistance from the High Commission as well as economic aid to the Fiji government.
The Association has aimed to assist several ground projects, including efforts of a local group in Nadi to help solo mums affected by Covid-19 loss of jobs and their children. Pre-school and primary-aged children have also been assisted.
The current essay competition results are pending but it is hoped we can offer additional cash prizes to students due to the unlikely prize-giving or school visits taking place this year as matters unfold in Fiji. This will be another direct way to help students at this time.
Meanwhile, several NZ Banks have waived transfer fees to enable people to send money to their families.
Contact continues with the Fiji Ministry of Education. As the Auckland-based Judges work through nearly 500 entries that were submitted by 90 secondary schools in this year's writing competition, with several hundred essays on Covid-19, the Association is examining ways of further assistance to students catch up on curriculum with revision materials.
